If I told you that a piece of tape could change your life, I wonder what you would think?
I know it probably sounds peculiar, but that’s exactly how it was for me.
Let me ask, do you breathe through your mouth or your NOSE? Have you ever thought about it?
How about during sleep and exercise?
Did you know your mouth is not designed for breathing, ever, except when eating, talking and certain high impact sport/exercise, and of course when unwell if the nose is congested; aside from that it’s all in the NOSE.

The NOSE is so perfectly designed for breathing, it does everything our body and mind require to obtain the maximum benefit from every single breath we take.
So why then do so many of us breathe through our mouth?
There are many reasons why this could be…

An illness that caused nasal congestion forcing mouth breathing and forming new and bad habits that stick!

Anatomical, in other words physical obstruction in the upper airway system, we may have a deviated septum ( Approximately 70% to 80% of people have a deviated septum) this is a misalignment of the nasal septum, the cartilage that divides the two nasal passages.

Most people don’t even notice but for some it can obstruct nasal breathing!

Oral structural issues such as enlarged adenoids and or tonsils, asthma, allergies an underdeveloped jaw leading to a high and narrow palette and or overcrowding of teeth which could be due to thumb sucking, a dummy, childhood illness leading to insufficient facial growth and pressure on the nasal airways, this forces the mouth to take over breathing, and sadly leads to even more development problems, it’s really a huge concern these days!

Modern life, so stress, fear, anxiety, racing mind, poor focus, time pressures, peer pressure, societal expectations/pressures, depression, allergies, pollutants and toxins, diet, illness, the list goes on.. these can all be contributing factors to mouth breathing.

Using the mouth to breath over time can have huge physical and psychological impact, its often gradual and cumulative so the connection is not always obvious to many, but the fact is the way we breath literally affects every single part of us and not always in a good way.
Think of it like this…
“When you use your mouth to breath, you’re allowing cold, dirty, unfiltered and dry air to enter your lungs and then move into your bloodstream ”.
“When you use your NOSE to breath, you’re allowing filtered, warmed, moistened air full of Nasal Nitric Oxide to enter the lungs and blood stream, which is exactly as it should be”.

I first came across the concept of FUNCTIONAL BREATHING several years ago after reading a book called ‘Breathe’ by James Nestor, it resonated so deeply with me that I immediately went off to do my own research, what I learned was the beginning of changing my life not only for my health but now it’s my career and passion too.
I was a chronic mouth breather day and night, I had a lot of physical and mental challenges that were gradually having more and more impact as the years went by.

So what did I do first?
I bought myself a roll of surgical tape and started to tape up my mouth for sleep, it felt odd but it also made sense, so why not.
This literally did the trick, finally I was sleeping with ease, properly, undisturbed and restoratively.
I began waking up more refreshed, no dry throat or lips, I started to notice I was calmer, had more energy, better focus, a quieter mind, the benefits were endless..
Here I am now, years on and I still tape my mouth every single night. The only difference is now I use ‘MYOTAPE’, ( and a great ‘nasal dilator’ from ‘Mute’ too) - MyoTape is a much safer and more purposely designed tape for the job, especially if you suffer with snoring, sleep apnea, heart issues, anxiety, panic disorder and more…
It’s really important you make this conversion to using tape at night very gradually and safely, rather than taping across the mouth as I did it’s wiser to allow yourself to breathe through the mouth at points when needed during sleep which MyoTape does. You can then move to surgical tape once you’ve adjusted.
So how does MYOTAPE work?
It’s a rectangular piece of elasticated fabric with a hole in the centre.
The reason for elasticity is in order to stretch the tape to around 30% more before fixing it around the mouth, this creates a tension that encourages the muscles surrounding the mouth to stay closed, then the nose becomes the primary space for breathing.
The other great benefit is using MYOTAPE regularly is it will begin to train muscle memory, the brain in time will begin to build a new pathway, leading to the development of a new habit of breathing during sleep which can with effort also lead to daytime nose breathing too. For daytime breathing practise you can just use surgical tape as you’re awake.
To me it really makes sense, by simply making the effort for a period of time to change the way you breath you can literally change your life, leading to better long-term health, fitness and happiness.
