    The Power of Lemon

I’ve been keen to share this knowledge with you about the power of lemon, specifically the oil.

I listened to a talk by someone also working with Doterra who has a background in science. The talk  started with a piece of polystyrene...

The polystyrene represents petrochemicals. So what are petrochemicals?

They’re chemicals made from petroleum ‘aka’ oil or natural gas ‘aka’ fossil fuels. Also called ‘non renewable’ resources because it takes millions of years for the planet to create them and as we know they’re running out fast, they’re unsustainable!

It’s only been around a century since their discovery but petrochemicals are everywhere in modern life. As the foundation for all the most common plastics, it’s used in almost everything imaginable; pesticides, pharmaceuticals, household items, technology equipment, cosmetics, paints, insulating materials, food containers and packaging, water bottles, synthetic fibres, flooring, fertilisers, solvents, detergents, upholstery, ink, motor oil the list goes on and on...

From extraction to disposal, the life cycle of petrochemicals comes with many negative environmental impacts. Use of fossil fuel petrochemicals results in the release of ‘fossilised carbon’ that has been trapped for millions of years - ultimately ending up as atmospheric CO2 (greenhouse gas) and contributing to climate change. Petrochemicals don’t just take a long time to create, the long breakdown in the natural environment leaves behind a very toxic legacy for the future generations and the planet.

Not only do petrochemical have many negative environmental impacts they also impact on human health, many petrochemicals are some of the most toxic chemicals known to man, and they’re in everything in one form or another, we’re constantly exposed to them. Petrochemicals in plastic leach out into our foods, drinks, medicines, body products, cleaning products, they’re added to foods in the form of fertilisers and pesticides they’re everywhere!

So what is the problem with petrochemicals? Our body cannot get rid of them, they’re too big and chunky for our liver and kidneys to break them down so instead the body stores these toxins away by wrapping them up in a fat cell, this is our body’s way of protecting us from the toxicity of the petrochemicals.

Imagine your fat cells as bunches of grapes, some are clean and healthy, others have petrochemicals inside. When we lose weight our body will cherry pick the fat cells choosing only the clean ones leaving behind the others, the body is so clever and knows not to release the fat cells containing petrochemicals as the liver and kidneys just could not cope with the enormity of processing them. Instead these fat cells remain stored away in the body and that’s how we end up with cellulite which can eventually lead to disease and illness if the body becomes too overloaded.

I bet you’re wondering where the lemon comes in, well at the beginning of the talk two drops of DoTerra lemon oil were placed on the piece of polystyrene (approx 4 cms deep), almost immediately you could see the polystyrene start to dissolve the petrols and eventually it went right through! There are no fumes just a lemon scent because this is NOT a chemical reaction, the lemon is a natural solvent.

If you were to simply add a couple of drops of lemon oil ( remember this is a concentrate of lemon) to a glass of water everyday, it will slowly work its way around your body so that when it comes into contact with the fat containing the petrochemicals, it’s going to break them down into little components and dissolve them in order for the liver and kidneys to handle them and begin to flush them out.  Also just to add that using a whole lemon piece in your water which is still great, firstly this won’t be as potent as the concentrated oil and secondly the juice of lemon is very acidic which if used over a long period can weaken the enamel of your teeth!

An analogy used for this is to imagine you were a caveman and are given a rock crystal of salt or sugar, then you put it into water and eventually it dissolves, you’d probably think I’m not drinking that liquid if it dissolves rock!! The water acts as a natural solvent in the same way as the Lemon is also just a natural solvent and breaks down the bonds and the components of that compound into smaller pieces which can then be flushed away, all harmlessly and naturally.

It’s remarkable, this just makes me love and trust in nature all the more, that’s why the oils are so beneficial for us, they’re natural we share a very similar chemistry to them, we have a synergy with plants so together when used correctly they work in harmony with our system and know where they needed and what to do.
